THERE is an upside to the downturn after all – more people are choosing to have short breaks at home.
And the world’s leading website for hotels has found that the number of Irish people choosing Letterkenny as a destination has more than DOUBLED last month on last year.
In fact visitor numbers to the Co Donegal town last month were up an incredible 233% on the same month last year.
With so many great hotels on offer – like the Mount Errigal, the Radisson Blu Gallaghers, the Clanree and the Station House Hotel – and a great reputation for excellent nightlife and dining, Letterkenny is experiencing something of a tourist boom.
Irish people are choosing to stay put this year and holiday on home soil with weekend breaks very popular.
Dun Laoghaire showed the largest year-on-year increase of 370%.
But Letterkenny with a 233% increase was right up there.
“As we would expect at this time of year, the Irish are looking to book that short break away, what’s interesting is that this year, they are choosing to take that break in Ireland,” said Kate Hopcraft of Hotels.com.
