LETTERKENNY MAYOR REVEALS HEARTACHE OVER SUICIDE

Mayor of Letterkenny Gerry McMonagle has led a minute’s silence in memory of those who have or may commit suicide over the Christmas period.

Mayor McMonagle told his fellow councillors that he had recently lost a close friend who took his own life.

Cllr McMonagle said he questioned if he could have done anything to stop his friend from committing suicide.

“People are struggling already and Christmas will put a lot of added pressure on people.

“I want people to remember eachother at Christmas and for the rest of the year and to help people out whenever they can.

“Be that simply calling to someone for a cup of tea and lending a listening ear.

“Suicide is a blight on our country and we need to continue to recognise that it is a major problem and people are continuing to take their lives,” he said.
