GAA fans are up in arms after dozens of them received parking tickets in the post after the recent Senior League Final.
The fans from both Ardara and Naomh Conaill (Glenties) got the shock €40 fines this week after the game at St.Eunan’s O’Donnell Park in Letterkenny in November12th last.
The motorists were forced to park outside the ground after the St.Eunan’s car park filled up very quickly because of the huge crowd attending the game.
A number of fans spoken to by Donegaldaily.com said the arrival of the fine in the post this week was the first they knew abut it.
All of those we have spoken to are adamant that they never received a parking ticket on the day.
Sources close to St.Eunan’s say they are not happy by the move as they have ben trying their best to attract the big games to the club ground.
We understand that an announcement had been made before the game asking fans who had been doubled-parked close to the roundabout opposite the entrance to the ground to move their cars.
Many of these cars were removed and no other announcement was made.
One fan who received a parking fine said he was livid that Gardai had chosen to fine fans.
“It was not a case that the road had been blocked. Yes, cars were parked up on footpaths but that has always been the case.
“I for one never received any parking ticket on the day and I was shocked when I got the fine in the post this week.
“It’s not the money as much as that annoys me. But it’s the fact that I could not have parked anywhere else.
“There was a huge amount of cars trying to park. Personally I was parked on a very wide footpath. I could have parked on the road but I would have been blocking traffic and I didn’t want to do that.
“I’m sure St.Eunan’s are annoyed by this because this heavy-handed approach by Gardai helps nobody,” he said.
