It is believed ice could have caused a serious accident in Termon this morning.
The accident happened when the driver of a BMW lost control of his car around 5.45am.
No other cars were involved in the smash.
The fire service were on the scene very quickly but it took two hours to cut the injured man from the wreckage.
He was transferred to Letterkenny General Hospital where his condition is understood to be serious but stable.
