Letterkenny Institute of Technology (LYIT) hosted a very successful interactive “Maths of the Simpsons” show to mark Maths Week Ireland recently for primary school children from all over Donegal.
This is the second year LYIT has hosted the event.
This year the Institute invited Matt Parker, maths enthusiast and teacher, to present his highly entertaining interactive event called “Maths of the Simpsons” which was very well received by the young students.
The school children enjoyed entertaining and educational sessions, which included statistics and probability presented in a very simple and realistic way.
Matt presented The Famous Birthday Problem and then showed the maths behind the national lottery which left no one in doubt as to the very poor odds!!
In the second show students were treated to the highly popular “Maths of the Simpsons” and the children left with a very different angle to mathematics, especially to shapes in geometry.
Above all else it showed that maths can be enjoyable – doh!!
Now in its sixth year Maths Week Ireland is coordinated by Calmast at Waterford Institute of Technology which is a partnership of over 40 organisations and groups committed to promoting maths.
The primary aim behind Maths Week Ireland is very simple. The events are designed to show that maths can be fun and that numbers are all around us!
