GARDAI were hailed as heroes today after a dramatic rescue.
Officers managed to persuade a man who was threatening to throw himself off the Oldtown Bridge in Letterkenny last night from ending the scene.
Up to six Gardai were involved in the operation as a heavy build-up of traffic began to gather at the busy junction.
Gardai with hand-held torches directed traffic across the bridge as a friend of the man arrived on the scene to talk with him.
“Gardai at the scene were very patient and persuaded the man not to throw himself into the river,” said one eye-wtiness.
“Thank God they arrived on time. It was very distressing for people who came across the scene.
“We just pray the man is all right now and is receiving the help he needs,” she added.
The area was sealed off for more than half an hour as Gardai chatted to the man.
Another eye-witness told us: “I was in town to pick up a few bits and pieces from the shop and came across this.
“Gardai were very professional. This is the sort of unseen work these heroes do.
“They saved a life and they deserve recognition for that.”
