TENANTS of Letterkenny Shopping Centre have gone on a rent strike – furious that the moneybags developers behind the centre are refusing to negotiate rent reductions.
Donegaldaily.com understands that some unit tenants are being forced to cough up a massive €100,000-per-year in rent.
Proctor’s newsagents and one other outlet have already closed.
But donegaldaily.com has learned that other tenants are getting ready to quit the centre unless rents are reviewed.
The centre is owned by wealthy corporate group Harcourt Developments.
Sources there claim some tenants had been involved in a rent strike and may be locked out of the premises in the coming weeks.
“It may come to that,” said one Harcourt insider, when asked if more tenants could be evicted.
However the source wouldn’t deal with the issue of the massive rents.
“There hasn’t been a rent rise for several years,” said the source.
