ONCE again the Regional Cultural Centre brings history alive in a way that no other organisation can.
And the latest is this stunning film….Down in the Valley. (click above to play)
Directed by Letterkenny film-maker Aoife Foley, and produced by local history expert Ronan McConnell, Down in the Valley is a short but inspirational documentary on the traditional music and song of the Laggan and Finn valleys.
Within this area of mixed religious backgrounds, song and music has always played an important role for both communities and transcended any divides.
The local traditional style is unique, maybe not so much in technique, but in the fact that many of its practitioners could read music notation and would regularly compose tunes themselves.
The film also contains extremely rare footage of the Finn Valley from 1960, focusing particularly on the Sessiaghoniell area.
Featuring interviews, music, songs, and recitation from Billy McLean, Seamus Gibson, and Martin McGinley.
Down in the Valley is one of 18 commissioned community films for the Sharing Stories Project by the International Fund for Ireland. To view the other films please call into the Regional Cultural Centre, Letterkenny.
