EXCLUSIVE: THIS is the priest being tipped to replace Seamus Hegarty as the next Bishop of Derry – Ireland’s fourth biggest diocese covering parts of Donegal, Tyrone, Derry and Antrim.
Monsignor Eamon Martin was appointed Vicar General of the diocese just 16 months ago.
Monsignor Martin had previously been Executive Secretary of the Irish Conference of Bishops. He moved from that post to the new position last May.
Monsignor Martin is a native of Pennyburn, Derry. He entered seminary, after second level education at St. Columb’s College, Derry.
He studied for the priesthood at St. Patrick’s College, Maynooth. He holds a Bachelor of Science (Honours) Degree in Mathematical Science from the National University of Ireland, Maynooth, a Bachelor of Divinity (Honours) Degree, from St. Patrick’s College, Maynooth, a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (with distinction) from Queen’s University, Belfast, a Master of Philosophy Degree from Cambridge University and NPQH from the Institute of Education, London.
Monsignor Martin, 48, was ordained a priest in St. Patrick’s Church, Pennyburn, Derry, on 28 June 1987. He served as curate in St. Eugene’s Cathedral, Derry, from 1987 to 1989. Following this, he completed his one-year Post Graduate Certificate in Education, before being appointed to teach at St. Columb’s College, Derry, where he subsequently became President, in the year 2000.
He directed the college as President until 2008, when he was appointed Executive Secretary of the Irish Conference of Bishops.
He is said to be well-liked by the priest of the diocese and is said to be very progressive.
