Laghey Post Office will not reopen, sources at An Post have revealed.
The post office has been closed since last June after alleged irregularities were uncovered.
Now Senator Brian Ó Domhnaill has said he is shocked and appalled by confirmation today that Laghey Post Office will not reopen.
He said “Sources within An Post have confirmed today that Laghey is to permanently lose its post office. This will come as a major blow to the community and will certainly have an impact on local businesses.
“Since Laghey Post Office was closed suddenly in July the people of Laghey village have been without a proper postal service, with older people and those in receipt of social welfare forced to travel to Donegal town to collect the payments owed to them.
“Now we are finding out that the closure is permanent, and the real economic and social impact is dawning on the community.
“There is no doubt that this closure will have an impact on jobs in the community. Local businesses have been dependent on having a local postal service and removing such an amenity from the village will not only be an inconvenience, but will also damage the local economy,” he said.
Senator O’Domhnaill said he is now demanding a full explanation as to why the post office will not reopen.
“I am calling on An Post and the Minister for Communications Pat Rabbitte to outline the full rationale for this decision and explain when they intended to inform the public.
“Approximately 500 people use Laghey Post Office every year and they are owed a full explanation.”
