Sinn Fein in Donegal have wished Michael D Higgins their warmest congratulations after predicting he will be the ninth President of Ireland.
Padraig MacLochlainn TD told Donegaldaily.com that he was delighted for the Labour party candidate.
But the Buncrana politician said he was delighted at how well Martin McGuinness had done in both constituencies in Donegal where he topped the poll in Donegal North East.
Sean Gallagher can take some comfort as he is looking likely to top the poll with around 33% just ahead of McGuinness in the south west of the county.
Deputy MacLochlainn said he was delighted for Michael D Higgins.
“I am delighted that Martin has done so well but I am also pleased about the fact that Michael D Higgins is going to be our next President.
“His track record speaks for itself including his support of the Irish language and also the fact that he got rid of Section 31,” he said.
Labour party Senator Jimmy Harte said he was delighted Michael D Higgins will be our next President.
“He has done remarkably well here in Donegal where there would not be a traditional Labour vote.
“He holds a special place in his heart for Donegal and that has been reflected in his vote,” he said.
And despite being tipped to poll well in Donegal North East, Dana only polled 7% of the vote.
