Almost 40 years after he played three games for the Republic of Ireland, a Donegal man is to be finally recognised for his sporting achievements.
Gerry Meehan played alongside a number of household names including Frank Stapleton, Liam Brady and David O’Leary.
Gerry played for the Republic of Ireland at schoolboy level in 1973 – 38 years ago. But he never received three caps for the games he played.
Now a chance encounter with FAI boss John Delaney has led to Gerry’s dream being realised. He will be getting them after all these years!
The pair had a chat during his recent visit to Letterkenny to open the new stand at Leckview Park.
John promised he would look into the matter and now he has been true to his word.
Gerry said “I honestly never thought this day would come and I am just so delighted.”
Gerry is currently the vice-Chairman of Letterkenny Rovers FC as well as an Honorary Life Member.
It will be presented to him by Dessie Kelly, member of FAI Senior Council, at the Station House Hotel on Monday, 31st October at 8pm.
Gerry’s achievement will be featured in the match programme for the forthcoming Euro 2012 play-off between the Republic of Ireland and Estonia at the Aviva Stadium.
