Voting in the presidential election begins today on the islands off Donegal’s coastline.

The 760 voters on Tory, Arannmore, Gola, Inishboffin, Inishfree go to the polls three days before those on the mainland.

Among one of the first people to vote is expected to be Patsy Dan Rogers, the King of Tory island.

“The people of Tory Island and all the islands off the coast of Donegal value their vote very much.

“We are expecting a strong turn-out to decide who will be Ireland’s next President,” he said.

Ballot boxes will be transported to the islands by helicopter and by ferry and kept until lock and key until counting begins on Friday.

Voting on the islands will continue on Tuesday and Wednesday on Clare Island, Inishbiggle and Inishturk and the Aran Islands.

The 466 voters on the islands off Cork will vote with people on the mainland on Thursday.

Altogether, there are 2,588 people registered to vote across Ireland’s 19 islands.
