A leading undertaker has claimed the public has lost complete respect for the dead.
Pascal Blake has been a funeral director for almost 20 years.
But now he has slammed drivers for overtaking funerals, beeping horns and disrupting corteges.
“There is just no respect from a lot of people these days. People don’t care if a funeral cortege is going through their town.
“People beep their horns and overtake funeral corteges. It has simply changed over the years.
“People are so busy and in a rush with their own lives that they don’t care about the dead anymore,” he said.
Mr Blake from Letterkenny, said that in the past people would stop everything they were doing when a funeral cortege came through a town.
But now he says motorists have even tried to run over his staff rather than stop for a funeral cortege.
“People would pull down their blinds, bow their heads and children would not be allowed to play on the streets during a funeral.
“I’m not expecting that but the general respect has gone completely.
“Some of my staff have nearly been run over by motorists when they tried to stop traffic to allow a funeral hearse through a road,” he said.
He said the one group of people who always show respect are students.
“I find the majority of students are very respectful and always stop and bow their heads or bless themselves.
“At least they have some kind of respect for the dead but in general there is a lack of respect and it is getting worse,” he said.
