A RESIDENT committee chairman today called for calm on a housing estate, insisting: “It’s not like Iraq!”
Community association boss David McCann spoke out after reports of intimidation and attacks in the Lawne Park estate in Ballyshannon – which included residents telling a radio station about violence there.
However Mr McCann said today: “This is very sad because it has been blown out of proportion and compares us to Iraq.”
Mr McCann, who has lived on the estate for a decade and has been residents chief for five years, insisted: “This is all about a small number of people involved in petty feuds and arguments.
“This group of people are their own worst enemies and are becoming quite embarrassing.
“Despite some rumours these incidents have absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with the Travelling Community – they are not the issue.
“The majority of people live here peacefully but there are too many people hiding behind closed doors and not speaking out.”
Mr McCann said he had considered resigning from his position.
Gardai, councillors and local people met earlier this week to discuss allegations of ongoing vandalism and violence on the estate.
