Donegal County Council is investigating more than 2,400 cases of alleged non-compliance of planning permissions.
More than 17,000 individual rural housing applications were granted permission between 2000 and 2010, making up approximately 85 per cent of applications during that period.
The council said planners were looking into 2,408 live enforcement cases across the county. The matter was raised at a recent meeting of the Stranorlar electoral area committee.
The largest number of investigations was in the Donegal electoral area (629), followed by Inishowen (569), Glenties (562), Stranorlar (264), Milford (227) and 157 in Letterkenny electoral area.
A spokesperson for An Taisce-Donegal said they were “very surprised” to hear that the figure was so high.
