PICTURE EXCLUSIVE: Gardai are today examining CCTV footage after an arson attack in Letterkenny in the early hours of this morning.
A number of buildings on the town’s Main Street were put in danger after thugs set fire to a skip close to Blake’s Bar.
The skip quickly spread to a large blaze which sent smoke billowing down the town’s Main Street into oncoming traffic.
Gardai and two sections of the local fire service were quickly on the scene of the blaze which broke out around 1.30am today.
Gardai quickly sealed off the street as members of the fire service brought the blaze under control.
The emergency services quickly had the blaze under control and the street was reopened a short time later.
However one eye-witness said the malicious blaze was a disgrace and could have caused more serious damage.
“How were they to now what was in that skip. There could have been a gas cylinder or petrol which could have exploded.
“Hopefully the Gardai will have a good look at the CCTV footage and bring those responsible for this stupid act to justice.
“People might think it’s a laugh but somebody could have ben killed as a result of tonight’s fire.
“What kind of idiot goes out of their way to set fire to a skip-full of rubbish?
“This could have been a real disaster if it had spread to shops on the Main Street,” he said.
There were a number of explosions from the skip during the incident, frightening tourists to the town.
