SENATOR David Norris’s bid to get the support of Donegal County Council is doomed, sources said tonight.
We understand it is too late to include a nomination application from Norris in next Monday’s agenda.
Norris won the support of Fingal County Council tonight.
But that won’t happen in Donegal next Monday.
All motions for next week’s agenda had to be included by last week and legal advice given to Donegal County Council tonight states clearly that it would be illegal for the council to allow the nomination of the senator.
Asked to comment on earlier reports that the council could hold the key to Norris getting a council nomination, Cllr Dessie Larkin said: “We have looked at this today and we are told that this cannot be allowed under statutory policies, either as an inclusion in the agenda or as an emergency motion.”
Even if the nomination were to go ahead, it’s likely that Fine Gael, Sinn Fein and Labour would oppose it.
