Vital X-Ray equipment bought by the people of Killybegs and Donegal Town is sitting unused because of HSE staff shortages, TD Thomas Pringle has said.
Radiographers who normally operate the equipment have been transferred to Letterkenny General Hospital to work there.
This means that the Killybegs and Donegal Town units have been closed for the past two weeks and no date for their reopening has been given by the HSE.
Local Independent TD Thomas Pringle, who raised the matter, said he wants guarantees the units will reopen.
He says the opening of the units again will take pressure off Letterkenny General Hospital who will now have to take all the burden.
Said Deputy Pringle: “I have contacted the HSE and they have assured me this is a temporary measure and I hope it is.
“We simply cannot afford to allow the X-ray units in both Killybegs and Donegal Town to close for good.
“Huge fundraising campaigns were successfully launched to get this vital equipment and now it is just sitting there doing nothing.
“I appreciate there are staff shortages but I do not want to be coming back in the future and being told the units are still shut.
“This simply has to be a temporary measure and I want a radiographer reinstated in Killybegs and Donegal Town as soon as possible.
“The efforts and the needs of the people of both these communities cannot be allowed to be in vain,” he said.
