Letterkenny has been chosen as one of the first locations in the country to be part of a €100 million project by telecommunications giant Eircom in new fibre-optic broadband.
The new technology is certain to put the town on the map for prospective employers looking to set up new companies here.
Eircom boss Paul Donovan said upgrade work on the current broadband line in Letterkenny and other selected town will start this year.
After that it is hoped the overhaul of the current service to a state-of-the-art broadband network service is expected to be complete by the end of 012.
“This is the next step in the rollout of high speed broadband services.
“We have selected locations which have a geographical reach beyond Dublin and across the country.
“We believe there is a strong appetite for new fibre based products and services that will be competitively priced.
“Work will commence later this year and we hope to have the network upgrade completed by the end of Summer 2012,” Donovan promised
The other regional towns chosen as part of the ambitious project include Mervue (Galway); Douglas (Cork); Dooradoyle (Limerick); Tallaght, Ballyboden, Palmerstown, Swords, Donabate in Co. Dublin and Clonee in Co Meath.
Once Phase 1 is completed, fibre-optic broadband will pass more than 100,000 homes and businesses within the selected areas, providing speeds of 40 Mbps and beyond.
