Patrick’s Delight in President’s Day win at Portsalon
On Saturday 20th August the members of Portsalon Golf Club contested for the second major golfing title of the year. The prize on offer was Willie Mc Cleary’s Presidents Prize. With a strong breeze blowing across the Banks it left conditions difficult for good golf on the outward nine. The event was staged with an 18 hole stableford course. The overall winner and indeed his first major golfing title at Portsalon golf club was Milford’s Patrick Crerand. Patrick playing off a 13 handicap who was one of the last golfers to take to the the Portsalon ‘’banks’’, mastered the windy conditions and made the turn with 22 points. Having blanked the par three tenth hole he recouped and recorded a further 19 points on the homeward nine to amass a magnificent total 41 points on the day, Runner up was Ronan Mc Clafferty (16) 38 points. Gross John Shields (3) 33 points, 3rd Tommy Mc Intyre (27) 37 points, 4th Patrick Shields (16) 37 points, Country Member 1st: Barry Overend 33pts
Country Member 2nd: Eamon O’Brien 28pts, 20+ Handicap: Mick McGlynn (22) 36pts
Best Nine’s : Dave Hughes and Shaun Shields. The CSS was 36 points.
The President Willie Mc Cleary welcomed his family to Portsalon golf club and the club members on this his Presidents Day. The President thanked the members who participated in this his Presidents Day at Portsalon Golf Club. He thanked Sean Mc Gettigan and his catering staff for the magnificent food served on the night. He thanked Grace and Carina for all their work during the day. He thanked the members for the honour bestowed upon him and indeed it is his privilege to be President of Portsalon Golf Club.
Captains Outing
One of the onerous tasks bestowed on the vice captain is to organise the captains outing. The vice captain D P Logue has this year arrange a remarkable golfing feast with golf to be played on both the prestigious Portstewart golf links. Team News
On Sunday last the Portsalon senior team travelled to Ballybofey golf club for the return leg of the their semi final. Going into the match Portsalon held a slender advantage of four matches to Ballybofeys three matches. This was always going to be a difficult assignment for Stephen Connolly and his team. The outcome saw the Ballybofey club advance to the final. The Captain Donal Callaghan would like to extend his thanks to Stephen Connolly and all the team members who represented Portsalon golf club in this years seniors event.
Results
The winner of the Sunday member’s competition was Ken Sharpe (23) with 39 points, Runner up Joe Harrison (14) 36 points. The CSS was 34 points. On Wednesday the winner of the open competition was 19 handicaper Colm Mc Conigley who recorded one of the biggest scores at Portsalon this year with 46 points, runner up was Anthony Toland (19) 39 points, Gross Ryan Mc Gettigan (7) 30 points, 3rd Odhran Mc Gowan (16) 38 points. The CSS was 38 points. On Friday last Portsalon Golf club staged an 18 hole open ladies and gents competition in aid of the Irish Cancer Society. The winner was John Cullen, runner up Mick Mc Glynn. The ladies winner was Kathleen Friel. The organiser would like to thank Portsalon golf Club for the course on the day, all who participated, those who sponsored prizes and gave donations on the day.
Match Play
Members are reminded that the all match play who are due to have their match played should note that in the event of the matches not being played by the due date a draw will take place to determine who proceeds to the next round.
Portsalon Ladies
The Portsalon ladies under the direction of Mary Barrett traveled to Templepatrick Golf Course for the final of the Ulster ILGU Intermediate Cup on Sunday last. Their opponents in the final were Rockmount golf club. On the day the Portsalon ladies found the Rockmount team to much and were narrowly defeated. The Captain Donal Callaghan would like to congratulate the team on reaching this prestigious final. He wishes also to thank all who represented Portsalon golf club in this competition.
