Karl Griffin, in far away, Trabson in Turkey, made the headlines locally and nationally this week when he performed magnificently at the European Under Youth Olympics Festival[EYOF].
The youngest athlete –Karl is just 18years old – at the games he fought his way through 800m heats on Tuesday and on Friday afternoon on the final day and in the final event of the festival he came from 8th position at the bell [halfway] to make his attack for a podium position with 200m to go.
The club congratulates Karl and the congratulatory messages from club members, the community and indeed nationally recognises the enormity of this achievement on an International stage. National media had the following report ‘On the last day of the EYOF’s in Trabzon, Karl Griffin of Tir Chonaill AC, secured the third bronze medal of the championships for the Irish in the 800m.
Griffin, made a decisive move at the 200m mark having drifted from the leading pack. He used his speed to move into medal position, finishing third in 1:51.64, less than a tenth away from a silver medal which was won by Nemanja Kojic of the Netherlands in 1:51.55, the winner was Brecht Bertels of Belgium in a time of 1:50.90. This brings Ireland’s medal tally at these championships to six; two gold, one silver and there bronze. There were also four athletes who finished in top eight positions. And to top off the tremendous performances there were four new Irish Youth Records set and six personal bests making it Ireland’s most successful championships ever.’
Mark Hegarty 4th in National Pentathlon
Mark Hegarty made the journey to Tullamore on Saturday for the Irish Multi events age group championships and came home very pleased with his overall score of 2,409pts –less than 50pts behind the bronze medal winner Darragh Costigam from Dunboyne.
The U15 five event pentathlon demands a multitude of skills in jumping ,throwing, hurdling and running and Marks bests of 14.17secs/80m Hurdles, 1.32m/High Jump,4.66m/Long Jump,9.09m/Shot Putt and 2mins 14.08/800m put the Killybegs lad into the top etchelon of Irish all round athletes

Rosses Point Sprint Triathlon and Lough Neagh Olympic Triathlon
It was a busy weekend for many of the clubs distance athletes. One of the counties top masters athletes, Leo Murray, had a great victory and a super second place went to young Eoin McManus and Jane McDevitt, in their respective categories at the Rosses Point triathlon while several personal bests were recorded by others at both the Rosses Point and Lough Neagh triathlons.Congratulations and well done to all.

Lough Neagh being a full Olympic distance, incorporating the Triathlon Ireland National Olympic Championships with over 300 competitors, (1500m swim, 40k bike and a 10k run) where Niall Clancy, Paul McDevitt and Canice Nicholas all recorded huge personal best with Diarmaid Keon having to pull out with mechanical failure. Club warm weather training camp
Names and [expressions of interest] are now being taken for the clubs annual warm weather training camp.
The location again is Monte Gordo in the Eastern Algarve, dates 31st December to 7th January.The location provides 10k of forest trails, 2k of very good grass trails, 8k of beach plus indoor/ outdoor track and field facilities, weights/conditions facilities plus sport science support services. National Senior T/F
On Saturday and Sunday next Santry is the venue for the Irish Senior Track and Field c/ships. The club and counties top athletes will be con testing for winning places. Tir Chonaill’s Mary McLoone, recovering from an injury, hopes to defend her Triple Jump title, Letterkenny’s exciting middle distant group led byDaren McBrearty and Mark English will challenge strongly in the 800m while Californian/Finn Valley Tori Penna will be hoping for a big performance in the Pole Vault. If in the Dublin area over the weekend why not stop off at Santry and give our athletes a cheer on.
