The Gaelic4GirlsNational Blitz Day was the culmination of an initiative by the Ladies Gaelic Association to encourage girls to take up gaelic football. Letterkenny Gaels with the assistance of Regional Development Officer Eliza Downey, established a winter training programme under the Gaelic4Girls banner that led to the club’s participation in girls football in the county for the first time.
On the day Gaels had two sets of twins playing, Aoife and Holly Rossbotham and Úna and Ellen Quinn. There were also three sisters Úna, Ellen and Eímear Quinn representing the club. All girls, coaches and parents lucky enough to have participated have returned filled with enthusiasm and with memories to last a lifetime.
Our Adult teams were free at the weekend. They play Naomh Padraig Muff this Saturday evening at home. The Minors are due to play St Michaels in the championship on Friday 22nd. All minors should be attending training.
The U16s play Naomh Colmcille in the Shield Final on Monday evening next.Congratulations to Peter O’Donnell, Shay Doherty, Cathair Doherty and Brian Diver who have been selected for the Donegal U12 hurling development squad that travel to Croke Park in July.
The U14s play neighbours St Eunans in O’Donnel Park on Friday evening. The U10s travel to Glenswilly on Saturday next for the Go-games.
.30 girls travelled from Páirc na Gaeil to Croke Park on Tuesday 5th July to take part in the Gaelic4Girls National Blitz Day. Gaels two teams played a total of 11 mini games against girls from all over Ireland and got to meet All Star footballers. On the pitch and off it, the girls were a credit to the club and have returned with great enthusiasm to continue playing.
Gaels hosted an U12 girls gaelic blitz for the first time last Saturday. Teams from Glenswilly, Fanad, Milford and St. Eunan’s attended with our own large squad. Gaels team, with some younger girls playing their first ever blitz, won three of their five matches and again showed great progress and competitive spirit. Thanks to coaches, referees and parents who provided refreshments for everyone.
An U8 hurling blitz took place at Páirc na Gaeil on Sunday morning with teams from Aodh Rua, St. Eunan’s, Setanta, Four Masters and Gaels playing. Gaels competed very well losing only one match out of seven with all the boys and girls playing with enthusiasm and skill. Credit goes to our four Young Whistlers who refereed and to coaches and parents for all their help on the day.
