ATHLETICS: EAMON HARVEY’S ATHLETICS REPORT

Letterkenny’s Daren McBrearty’s performance in Watford on Saturday night when he ran 3mins 42.68secs for 1,500m was the outstanding athletics achievement of the week. The occasion, a British Milers Club event attracted the top middle distance athletes from across Europe and found Mc Brearty, an 80m semi finalist at the European Indoors in Paris earlier in the year, win the ‘B’ 1500m  impressively in a new PB time, 5 seconds faster than he has ran before and in the process a qualification standard for the European U23. Noel Collins, a former silver medal winner a in the steeplechase  a tthe European Youth Olympics, ran 3mins 47 secs while Letterkennys rising star Ruairi Finnigan, ran 3mins 51secs for 1,500m. Ruairi, already has qualification times for European[Turkey] and World[France] Youth Olympics later in the summer.
