THE DEFENCE Forces have released an incredible video of how they tackled gorse fires in Co Donegal last week.
The footage – taken by the Defence Forces magazine – is now on DDTV and linked in the story above.
The officers on board flew countless hours of sorties over the Donegal countryside as firefighters and civilians below fought the blazes by hand.
More than 300,000 litres of water was dumped on the infernos as choppers armed with water buckets flew mission after mission.
The three-and-a-half minute video shows Air Corps pilots as they take off from Carrickfin airport, load their water bombs at Dunlewey and then dump the water on a gorse fire.
The Defence Forces deployed three Air Corps Helicopters, two AW139 with underslung ‘Bambi Buckets’ holding 1,200lts payloads and one EC135, to drop over 300,000 lts of water on the fires to help prevent fires reaching homes in remote mountainous areas.
Over 250 troops and 30 vehicles have also been deployed to Donegal since Sunday in support of fire fighting efforts there
