A Letterkenny councillor has called on the local council to set-up guided walking tours of the town to boost tourism.
Letterkenny celebrates its 400 anniversary this year with a host of events planned.
But FineGael councillor Jimmy Kavanagh says it’s almost impossible for tourists to find out about the history of the town.
“Many Towns around the country offer guided walking tours over the summer months; many of these Towns are a lot smaller than Letterkenny.
“I think that it is an idea that could boost tourism and help give the visitor a good impression of the Town, and would not be very expensive to implement.
“The tours could also be used as a means of informing tourists of events that are taking place in the town during their stay.
“We are putting an emphasis on the history of the town this year, so it would be a good time to start guided tours on a trial basis, maybe a couple of times a week.
“We have had architectural tours of the Town on culture night for the last two years and those tours seem to have been popular and well attended.
“The Town is rich in history, and architecture and the ingredients for an interesting tour are there in abundance.
“I believe it would help create a positive experience for the tourist and would show the Town as being a place that cares about and appreciates its visitors.” Cllr. Kavanagh concluded.
