DONEGAL LADIES GAA stars were at the centre of one of the greatest ever comebacks in the game’s history yesterday – coming from nine points down to Kildare to hit an astonishing 1-9 in the last eleven minutes.
The game ended 3-15 t 2-16 for Donegal at O’Donnell Park in Letterkenny.
And even manager Eamon O’Boyle was stunned by the victory!
“The girls showed great character to come back and sneak a victory and it really shows the will and determination that’s been built inthis team for the last two, three or four years. It showed again that they wanted it,” said O’Boyle.
Three points for a win leave our Ladies side in joint second with Monaghan in the Bord Gais Energy NFL Division One.
Kildare had dominated the start of both halves and it looked as if the Tir Chonaill ladies would suffer a home defeat.
Yvonne McMonagle missed a number of clear cut chances but still finished the game with a great 1-4.
And Geraldine McLaughlin – on the bench because of an injury – came on for the second half and scored a brilliant 1-4.
The comeback began just 11 minutes from time, with the home side trailing by nine points.
Aoife McDonald and Yvonne McMonagle hit two points each in a brilliant three minute spell.
Kildare responded by going for a goal, only to be denied by a brilliant point blank save by Donegal keeper Roisin McCafferty.
Geraldine McLaughlin then gathered the ball at the other end to fire into the net.
Eilis Ward then pointed for the home side to bring the sides within a point before McLaughlin hit the leveller.
And McMonagle fired over the winner in injury time.
Brilliant brilliant play by Donegal Ladies who travel to Monaghan next weekend.
