A man has appeared at a special sitting of Letterkenny District Court charged with drink-driving and dangerous driving.

Tiernan Devlin appeared before Judge Ciaran Liddy at the special sitting of the court last night to coincide with the rally weekend events.

Devlin, of Ivy Terrace, Dungannon, Co Tyrone was stopped by Gardai at Forte Lynn Retail Park in Letterkenny on Friday.

The 29-year-old had been spinning the tyres of his red Vauxhall car and was followed by Gardai and stopped.

When stopped he tested positive for alcohol.

His solicitor, Mr Patsy Gallagher, said his client was in the mid-scale of such offences but only just on the mid-scale.

He added that his driving was a “classic burn-out” and that there were no other manoeuvres or incidents of dangerous driving.

Mr Gallagher said that having spoken with Gardai they had agreed to strike out the charge of dangerous driving in the circumstances.

The accused man’s solicitor added that his client had consumed a few drinks over the day and thought he was okay to drive but it was now obvious that he was not.

He added that his client was pleading and that he wanted the disqualification to kick in straight away.

Judge Liddy fined Devlin €150 and disqualified him from driving for two years.

Legal aid was granted to Mr Gallagher.
