Sea-Fisheries Protection Officers have concluded their investigation into why hundreds of dead fish washed up in Bundoran on Tuesday night.
There were shocking scenes in the seaside town yesterday evening as shoals of dead horse mackerel washed up on the Bundoran reef. Many questions were raised locally over why so many fish had died suddenly.
An investigation was swiftly launched by Killybegs-based Sea-Fisheries Protection Officers (SFPOs) of the Sea-Fisheries Protection Authority into the incident.
The cause of the killing has been determined this afternoon as a natural event.
Officers who inspected the horse mackerel on-site have established that many of them were bloated and full of sprat.
A spokesperson said: “Having re-visited the site again this morning they have concluded that a shoal of horse mackerel, chasing sprat on an ebb tide on Tuesday evening resulted in a sizeable number of the shoal stranding on the beach.
“This is not an unusual occurrence, although the scale of this incident is not typical.”
The SFPA will liaise with both Leitrim and Donegal County Council in relation to the incident. It is expected that most of the fish will go out on the next tide.
