Donegal County Council is to start a safety review of all its piers and harbours in the coming weeks.
It follows the Buncrana tragedy last March in which 5 members of the same family died when their jeep came off the local slipway.
A spokesperson for the council confirmed that more than 100 piers and harbours will be examined as part of the process which will start in January.
The spokesperson said “Donegal County Council has appointed a Marine Engineering Consultancy Company to carry out a Safety Review of 100 Piers and Harbours in Co. Donegal.
“This work is now due to commence in early January 2017. Any remedial works recommended by this review will commence in the second quarter of 2017.”
There was an outpouring of grief on March 20th last when members of a Derry family on a Sunday afternoon drive perished.
Ruth Daniels, 57, her daughter Jody Lee Daniels, 15, her grandchildren, Mark, 12, Evan, 8 and son-in-law Sean McGrotty, 46, died perished in their Audi jeep.
Sean managed to hand his young daughter out to passer-by Davitt Walsh who heroically swam out to the sinking car and took the child to safety.
