A Canadian satirical website wrote a humorous piece about how the hit sitcom Father Ted has ruined a man’s life as all anyone wants to hear him say is; “sure I wouldn’t know, I’m from Donegal”.
Father Shaft, played by Kevin Sharkey, was the first to utter to famous phrase.
The fictional Clinton McAnulty was “interviewed” by the comedy news website Burrard Street Journal (the B.S. Journal), and claimed that the famous “sure I wouldn’t know, I’m from Donegal”, has plighted black priests from the county as he is constantly followed by people wanting to hear the famous phrase.
“People in Galway were obsessed with Father Ted, even more so than regular Irish people,” he said wearily. “They would follow me around everywhere, videoing me on their phones, trying to get me to say the line. By the end, I couldn’t even go out at all, aside from Donegal Tuesday of course.”
He concluded; “Because of Father Ted, Irish people now have a deep mistrust for milkmen with large moustaches. These stereotypes have to stop.”
The Burrard Street Journal describes itself as “a satire, parody and comedy news site. All articles, videos and images are fictitious and occasionally intended to be humourous.”
This satirical piece just goes to show how iconic Father Ted was, and continues to be despite production ceasing almost two decades ago, and how well the script-writers could capture the essence of Irish humour.
