A new Wild Atlantic Way ‘passport’ is set to help to promote Donegal tourism spots to tens of thousands of visitors.
Minister of State Joe McHugh TD said the new passport will help promote tourism spots and visitor attraction which might never have been visited otherwise.
The new ‘passport’ will see visitors gets stamps for each site they visit along the way with the chance of winning a holiday of a lifetime at the end.
Minister McHugh is very excited about the project and says Donegal can really benefit form the idea.
“The new Wild Atlantic Way Passport is a great initiative and will really help to promote tourism spots and visitor attractions in Donegal. The Wild Atlantic Way Passport is designed to encourage repeat visits to Ireland’s coast and promote tourism in Donegal, with this serving as a handy tool to help tourists find the 188 Discovery Points along the beautiful route.“The Wild Atlantic Way Passport can be purchased at over 130 selected An Post Offices along the Wild Atlantic Way. The Passport will cost €10 and this includes free entry into a draw for a holiday of a lifetime along the Wild Atlantic Way. As they make their way along the route, tourists will be able to collect official stamps at the local Post Office to prove they have visited the local Discovery Point.
“Donegal Airport was recently voted among the World’s Top Ten most scenic Airports in the World, the Sliabh Liag Cliffs were voted “Most Impressive Site to Visit” by customers of CIE Tours International, along with our Lighthouses in Fanad Head and St. John’s Point receiving International recognition, as well as opportunities such as Star Wars filming coming to Malin Head.
“We have a huge amount to offer our visitors, and I believe this Passport will help to promote other visitor attractions in Co. Donegal that tourists might not otherwise think to visit also.
“The Wild Atlantic Way has been a huge success for tourism growth throughout the counties on our Western seaboard and it contributed to what was a record breaking year of tourism in 2015, with more than 8.5 million overseas visitors to Ireland. This Passport gives Fáilte Ireland a fantastic new opportunity to market the Wild Atlantic Way, which will really help to increase visitor numbers to Donegal.”
